Non-renewable energy

Nuclear Fission

Advantages

  • Flexibility:
Nuclear power stations are able to easily adjust the power output according to how much is needed.

  • Pollution:
Nuclear power produces a lot of energy from a small amount of ore, which reduces pollution caused by mining.

Unlike fossil fuels, fission does not directly produce greenhouse gases. However, the uranium ore does still need to be mined and processed into fuel rods. These processes may use energy from other more polluting sources.

There are reactor designs that could be built that would 'burn' old nuclear waste as fuel, which would help to remove current nuclear waste stockpiles.
